As a golfer for over 50 years and a consistent 1-handicap, I’ve seen my share of putters come and go. But the mallet revolution has truly taken hold, offering golfers like myself a combination of forgiveness and precision that rivals the best blades.
After countless hours on the practice green and numerous rounds played, here’s my take on the top 3 mallet putters that impressed me most in 2024:
1. Odyssey White Hot OG 2-Ball Putter:
A legend reborn, the Odyssey White Hot OG 2-Ball Putter lives up to its iconic namesake. The familiar double-ball alignment is a classic for a reason, and the feel off the milled face is pure butter, offering exceptional feedback and distance control. While not the most forgiving on the list, its classic design and timeless performance make it a putter I always come back to for pure putting bliss.
I tried this putter out on the practice green and really loved the feel. I felt like I could make everything inside of 10 feet. Of the three putters I tried I definitely liked this one the best.
2. TaylorMade Spider Tour X #3 Putter:
Made famous by Rory McIlroy, the TaylorMade Spider Tour X #3 is a technological marvel. The combination of a high MOI head design, tungsten weighting, and the optically-engineered alignment system makes lining up and sinking putts a breeze. While the feel is a bit softer than the Odyssey, the forgiveness and accuracy this putter delivers are undeniable.
The face of the TaylorMade Spider Tour X #3 did feel a bit softer than the Odyssey putter but it might have just been me. Overall a very solid putter.
3. Scotty Cameron Phantom X 12 Putter:
Scotty Cameron putters are legendary for a reason, and the Phantom X 12 is no exception. This mallet boasts the highest MOI in the Phantom X line, translating to exceptional forgiveness on off-center hits. The multi-material construction, with a black aluminum face and stainless steel wings, provides a unique but satisfying feel at impact. While the price tag is on the steeper side, the performance and prestige of a Scotty Cameron are undeniable.
Bottomline: I love Scotty Cameron putters…all of them. I just find them a little out of my price range for a putter.
Choosing Your Perfect Mallet Putter:
Ultimately, the best mallet putter for you depends on your individual preferences and putting stroke. If you prioritize feel and classic design, the Odyssey is a strong contender. If forgiveness and cutting-edge technology are your game, the TaylorMade is a top choice. And if you’re looking for a blend of performance, prestige, and premium feel, the Scotty Cameron is worth considering.
Remember, the key to finding your perfect flatstick is to spend time putting with each option and see which one speaks to your putting confidence. Happy putting!
