Maybe on a calm day with some friends.

But not at the US Open.

At US Open our calculator predicts a score of 110.

That’s just over double bogey golf.

That still seems kind of low.

What do you think?

The Magic Behind the Calculator

Our calculator uses your Handicap Index to determine your Course Handicap, applying the formulas used by the USGA.

But what does that all mean?

Handicap Index: This is your golfing fingerprint, an average of your best scores, adjusted for the difficulty of the courses you’ve played.

It’s a number that levels the playing field, allowing golfers of different abilities to compete fairly.

Course Handicap: This number adjusts your Handicap Index for the specific difficulty of a course, allowing you to determine the number of strokes you get on any given course.

How It Works

  1. Enter Your Handicap Index: Simply type in your current Handicap Index into our calculator.
  2. The Prediction: Like a crystal ball, our calculator works its magic to reveal your Course Handicap and the score the USGA thinks you would shoot at Pinehurst #2.
  3. We’re going to show you your score if you shoot your handicap (this only happens 15-20% of the time), your expected high and low scores and then adjust it 3 strokes for tournament play.

The Reality Check

Now, for a bit of fun — we all know that golf is unpredictable.

That’s why our calculator also gives you a “Reality Score.”

This score takes into account the jitters, the wind that just picked up, and, of course, the turtleback greens that are almost impossible to play.

It also assumes Major Championship conditions and that you are playing in the Major alongside the pros.  So we add 7 strokes for tournament pressure.

We also bump up the course rating by 2 and the slope because the course will be made more difficult when hosting a Major golf tournament.

So go ahead, give our calculator a whirl, and see how you’d fare at Pinehurst #2.

World Famous Pinehurst #2

Designed by the legendary Donald Ross and later refined by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Pinehurst No. 2 is renowned for its strategic design and natural aesthetics that stay true to the original vision of its creator.

Known for its challenging greens and thoughtful layout, the course demands precision and rewards careful play.

  • Par: 72 (70 for the US Open)
  • Course Rating: 76.5
  • Slope Rating: 138
  • Yardage: 7,588 yards

Pinehurst No. 2’s design cleverly utilizes the natural sandhills and native grasses of North Carolina, making it a quintessential example of a course in harmony with its environment.

The greens are its defining feature, notorious for their convex shapes that challenge golfers to execute precise approach shots.

I went to the 2005 US Open and was surprised at how difficult the course is set up.

The rough was long and the greens look almost impossible to putt because of the turtle backs.

Balls landing on the edges often find themselves repelled, requiring both skill and strategy to navigate effectively.

A course rating of 76.5 indicates that Pinehurst No. 2 is challenging even for the best golfers, suggesting that a scratch golfer could expect to score approximately 76.5 in normal playing conditions.

The higher-than-average course rating reflects the difficulty of managing the tricky greens and the often penal rough surrounding them.

The slope rating of 138 further emphasizes the challenge presented by Pinehurst No. 2, particularly in the context of its undulating greens and strategic bunkering.

These features ensure that golfers must contend not only with the physical layout but also with the mental game, making it a beloved test for all who play it.
